Elise looked around her barren living room. Normally there would have been Christmas decorations throughout her home. This year she didn’t feel much like celebrating. A messy divorce had left a hole in her heart. She felt more like the Grinch than Jolly Saint Nick.

Thinking back, she couldn’t figure out where things had gone wrong. She’d noticed Todd’s attention waning, but she had chalked it up to stress from work. Little had she realized those late nights at the office were spent screwing his secretary on her desk and not preparing for meetings as she’d assumed. She’d been so naïve!

Walking to her bedroom, she grabbed the last of Todd’s things and carried them to the front door. Dumping the box on the front porch, she slammed and locked the door. The snick of the lock sounded so final that a tear slipped down her cheek.

Dashing it away with the back of her hand, she slowly made her way to the kitchen. Putting the kettle on, she grabbed a coffee cup and a tea bag from the cabinet. Maybe some holiday spice tea would make her feel better. She knew nothing would put her in the Christmas spirit, but maybe she would at least stop crying and feeling sorry for herself.

The kettle whistled and she poured the hot water into her cup. Dunking the tea bag thoroughly, she put the kettle back on the stove and went back to the living room. The cup almost fell from her hands at the sight before her! Where the floor had been bare, a holiday rug now dominated the floor. The empty corner by the fireplace now held a beautiful Fir tree, completely trimmed with lots of twinkling colored lights. Holly decked her mantle and mistletoe hung above her head.
