Devon set down his sandwich. His gaze swept her body, from the light blue scrub top covered with puppies wearing stethoscopes to her hair pulled back in a ponytail. “You look nice today, Sadie,” he said.

“Thanks. You don’t look so bad yourself.” She didn’t know what possessed her to add that last part. She grabbed another forkful of lettuce and swirled it in a small pool of dressing at the bottom of the plastic container.

“I feel like I should be apologizing for kissing you last night, but the truth of the matter is, I want to do it again.” Reaching across the table, he curled his fingers around her wrist, stopping her nervous movements. His thumb stroked her pulse point, sending tiny flares of heat through her veins.

Sadie released her fork. She gave a half-hearted attempt at pulling away.

Devon released her in order to stand and walk around the small table. He leaned against it.

“Well, we can’t. I work for you.” Her short, clipped words made him raise an eyebrow. Sadie forced her gaze up to his face, not wanting to stare at his crotch, impressive as the denim-covered bulge was. “It wouldn’t be a professional employee-employer relationship.” She shoved her chair away, wanting to put some distance between them.

“I’m not going to force you to do anything you don’t want to do, but unless I’m not reading you correctly, you want me as much as I want you. I can put our professional relationship aside, if you can.”

Sadie put the lid on her salad. That’s the part that worried her. What if she did put her professional relationship aside and their personal one went sour. She’d be working here, for a man she might end up hating, and that wasn’t healthy for either one of them. If she worked for another vet office, they wouldn’t be having this problem. Except, if she had been employed at another office, she may never have even met him. “I don’t think that’s a good idea,” she sat at last.

She sensed his presence as he followed her to the fridge. Drawing a deep breath, she stilled her thoughts. Her gut twisted and warred with the past she feared would repeat itself and the future she wanted to have.

Devon’s silence unnerved her. It was almost like he absorbed everything she said, processing it for future use.

“I—” She closed the fridge door, aware she stood there with it gaping open.

Devon braced one hand on the closed door.

Sadie turned found herself trapped between the metal door and Devon’s hard body. She glanced down. His very hard body. An answering tingling began low in her stomach. A warm heat flooded her body and made her think about the “closed” sign on the door. Sadie bit her lip and shook her head. “You might have had women fall at the sound of the Markier name, but I’m not one of those. Your type doesn’t appeal to me. I think we should keep whatever we have professional.”

“And what type is that? You think I’m a rich playboy who has everything handed to me. I snap my fingers and the women flock to me, right?”

Sadie shrugged. “You said it. Not me.” Did it make her catty that she’d actually thought it? Man, Ritchie had done a number on her. She hadn’t realized how much of one until Devon had come on to her. She struggled to hold onto her aloof demeanor, though inside she wanted to call a time-out and start all over again.

“I’m not like that. Damn it, Sadie!” He hauled her against him, his entire body rigid with tension.

Sadie fought the urge to wiggle against the hard cock pressing against her stomach. If she left her mind out of the equation, being with Devon made her want to wrap her body around his and never let go. Giving herself over to him would be so easy. Sure, she might hate herself afterwards, but it would feel oh-so-good when it happened.

Devon took advantage of her wandering thoughts by grabbing her wrists and forcing them behind her back. “You can slap me for this later,” he whispered an instant before he crushed his lips against hers.

Sadie whimpered in the back of her throat. His take-charge attitude set off her secret desires. His full-on assault scrambled her thoughts and sent tingles through her body. He didn’t ask, he demanded. And she willingly gave.

His tongue slid along the seal of her lips, plunging inside. He tasted like mint and kissed with all the skill of an expert. She’d dreamed, fantasized about this moment, and now Devon held her pinned against his hard body, his tongue clearly demonstrating what he’d like to do. Her arousal built, making her wet. Desires thought long buried to the realm of dreams flared to life.

Devon released her hands. He cupped the back of her neck, holding her still for his kisses. He devoured her with little nibbles and licks of pleasure. He drew in a breath, and then kissed her again.

Sadie threaded her fingers through his hair. Just as she dreamed, the silky smooth strands felt like heaven in her hands. She arched against him, wanting more intimate contact, and when he curved his hand over one breast, she moaned into his mouth.

Devon flicked his thumb across the taut bead of her nipple, a husky groan rumbling through his chest. He pulled his lips away to trail open-mouthed kisses over her neck, her jaw, down to where the vee of her shirt pointed to the valley between her breasts. Slipping his hand beneath her shirt, he palmed her breast through the cotton fabric of her bra.

Sadie closed her eyes. For a moment, she wished she’d worn something sexier, more inviting than the supportive white cotton, but she never expected Devon would seduce her in the employee lounge. The thought stilled her fingers in his hair.
